Who I Am
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in thirty-five years as a career counselor and life coach, it’s this:
You can’t know the future. But you can know what you bring to it.
The world keeps changing at a faster and faster pace every day. Just when we get used to one transition, we find ourselves in the midst of another. And another. Knowing who we are, what we want to do, and how we can do that has never been more important. But getting a clear vision of all of that can be challenging. I know that first hand and want to help others benefit from my life experience and professional training.
My name is David Borchard, and I enjoy helping adults find and use their energizing strengths in the most fulfilling ways possible in work, lifestyle, and leadership. My website offers a variety of fun and easy-to-use ways to help you do that, including the top-rated Pro Energy Profiler (PEP), available online, as well as a condensed paper and pencil version of it. I am also available for individual coaching sessions and a free, thirty-minute consultation about what works best for you.
I chose to become a counseling professional some thirty-plus years ago after going down a few blind alleys. I graduated from college with a degree in geology only to discover that I had no interest in being a geologist. That realization quickly became submerged in another ill-fitted trajectory—a “Call to Duty” as an officer in the U.S. Navy. While I had a natural facility for working with and leading men, I quickly learned that I was not particularly gifted or even interested in the duties of a line officer on an aircraft carrier. The completion of my service, however, brought an even greater challenge. I now had to figure out what I really wanted to do and how to go about it.
That was when I made one of the best investments of my life—career counseling. I came away from that life-changing experience with a vision that has inspired and energized me through many life transitions and a rapidly changing world.
To prepare for my new career path, I earned a doctorate in counseling psychology, specializing in psychological assessment and adult development. Over the decades I’ve been fortunate to serve in positions where my skills, education, and life experience have enabled me to help others realize and apply their unique potential in work, lifestyle, and leadership.
My credentials include …
I earned a doctorate in psychological counseling with support fields in adult development and psychological assessment. I received coaching training and coach certification from The Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, California, and Board Certified Coach (BCC) certification by the Center for Credentialing and Education. I’ve completed in-depth training in a range of psychological assessments including the Myers Briggs, 360 Degree feedback instruments, and the Herrmann Brain Dominance Survey.
My professional experience includes serving as the director of a career assessment and planning center at a large urban area community college, a career counselor with an international outplacement firm and at the World Bank in Washington D.C. I’ve also taught graduate level courses in career development at two major universities, and served on the faculty of the Federal Government’s Eastern and Western Management Development Centers as an executive coach and leadership development trainer. I’m the author of the books The Joy of Retirement: Finding Happiness, Freedom, and the Life You’ve Always Wanted, and ten editions of Your Career Planner. In my thirty-plus years of coaching, I’ve helped hundreds of professionals, leaders, and individuals in transition realize and apply their innate interests and signature strengths in work, lifestyle, and leadership.
I’d like to use my talents and experience to contribute to your wellbeing, to help you find the kind of fulfillment that comes from the deepest knowledge of who you are and how you can use your gifts to enhance your life in our changing world.
